At the start of the lecture-free period, several structural adjustments will be implemented in the Studierendenwerk’s campus catering services. These changes are based on an external report that recommends measures to ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of campus catering services. Some of the measures outlined in this report were already implemented last year. The adjustments now being made are a logical continuation of the implementation of these recommendations.
An overview of the changes:
- Hot meals at LEO PB:
Due to persistently low demand, the hot meal service will be permanently discontinued. Meal service will end on July 23, 2026. The vending machines, offering a selection of snacks and beverages, will of course remain available.
- Food Court US:
Starting with the lecture-free period, the Food Court’s hours of operation will change permanently. Starting July 27, 2026, the Food Court will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Meal service hours will remain the same (11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). The reason for the earlier closing time is that the low revenue generated in the afternoon is not economically justifiable given the operating costs incurred.
- Bistro AR:
The bistro will be closed during lecture-free periods. This will take effect for the first time on August 3, 2026. It will reopen one week before the start of the lecture period on October 5, 2026. While the bistro is closed, snacks and beverages will be available at the AR canteen starting at 8:00 a.m. The Tuesday kebab service will also move to the AR canteen during the lecture-free period. The reason for this is the low demand during the lecture-free period, which does not justify keeping two establishments with high operating costs open in close proximity to one another.
During the week of July 27 through July 31 and starting in the winter semester, the bistro will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Context of the Measures
The Studierendenwerk’s catering facilities must be managed in a financially responsible manner. The goal is to operate the catering services in a sustainable manner and to avoid structural deficits. Adjustments to opening hours and offerings are therefore necessary when demand and operating costs diverge over the long term.
The dining facilities are not intended as study spaces but primarily serve to provide meals. Of course, the areas can still be used during opening hours for relaxing, studying, or socializing. For focused study without time restrictions, the University of Siegen offers dedicated study spaces (LEOs).
Meal service hours at the canteens will not be affected by these changes.
These measures will not result in further staff reductions.
We ask for your understanding regarding these necessary adjustments. The goal is to ensure that campus dining remains reliable and sustainable even under changing conditions.
